MSF Goes To Clemson

What’s the best way to get a teenager ready for college? Take them on a campus tour! MSF has sponsored its first high school student to visit a university. Remmy is a junior in high school whose dream is to attend Clemson University. She wants to major in Chemistry. Her and her aunt, Oretha, attended the Spring Blitz week at Clemson on April 11th in Clemson, South Carolina.

Remmy was very excited about the opportunity. “I feel the trip will clarify my questions about going to Clemson. I get to see the campus itself, the dorm rooms and meet the staff that will help me while I am attending college here. I will have an overall understanding of the university and how it works. Specifically the class room and dorm room areas. I’ve been waiting a long time to have the opportunity to see the college!”

Mrs. Oretha was just as eager to visit the university. “The visit has eased my mind about what type of environment Remmy will be in outside of being home. Clemson is away from the city and has a nice calm atmosphere. Seeing the students on campus lets me know Remmy will follow the right group. It’s also not that far from home which is a plus. I would like to thank MSF for having an interest in us and encouraging Remmy to pursue higher education. Because of the organization, we have become successful in visiting the campus which will help her to decide where to go to college.”

Barrow County Back to School Bash

MSF had the pleasure of being onhand for the Barrow County Back 2 School Bash on July 23rd. We want to recognize and thank Markus Wingfield. Markus owns Mark & Company Barber Shop in Winder, GA. He very generously came out and gave free hair cuts for boys and girls at the Bash. He cut hair for 4 hours straight!

It wouldn’t have been a success without you, Markus! THANK YOU!

We would are also thankful for the MSF volunteers we hand onhand to help out.

Louisiana School Supply Drive

MSF traveled to Donaldsonville, LA for the Back to School Supply Drive held at the local Wal-Mart. The drive was hosted by Volunteer Ascension. The organization collects school supplies and uniforms for students of low income families that attend school in Ascension Parish.

MSF volunteers Steven and Javela Singleton attended the drive along with MSF President, Shannon Singleton. The event was from 8am until Noon. Many customers bought items on the school supply list or donated money. MSF chipped in by purchasing $280 worth of school supplies.

“The drive was a big success. I am grateful I had the opportunity to help out in my home town,” stated Shannon.

The supplies will be distributed to students once classes are back in session. MSF will be back in Donaldsonville for the uniform distribution event on August 2nd.

Donaldsonville Uniform Event

MSF traveled to Donaldsonville, LA for the 1st Annual West Ascension Parish Uniform Distribution event at Donaldsonville High School from 9am to 5pm on August 2nd. In addition to giving out uniforms, 200 care packages tagged with inspirational phrases were given to high school students. The care packages included deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and feminine hygiene products. Blow Pops with the positive messages were also given out to Pre-K through 8th grade students. All of the toothbrushes were very generously donated by Magualie J. Woollery DMD of Contemporary Dentistry in Loganville, GA.

MSF volunteers were among many that came out to support the event. To prepare for the giveaway, our volunteers put together care packages, staged the distribution area, sorted clothing, and organized uniforms. On the day of the affair, our helpers gave away care packages and Blow Pops, and filled uniform orders for the families. Approximately 216 students were helped. Once the event was over, MSF volunteers packed unclaimed uniforms and packages that were later distributed to the individual schools on the west side. MSF Junior Ty James had this to say about the event: “It was weird, even though I helped a few people, I felt like I was helping the whole entire world!”

We are very appreciative of all the help, donations, and support that were received. We would like to thank our MSF volunteers for their time and hard work.

PADV Thanksgiving (Part 1)

For the 2nd year in a row, MSF partnered with New Mercies Christian Church to sponsor a Thanksgiving event for Partners Against Domestic Violence (PADV). New Mercies’ performed a skit and other entertainment activities for the children and had Executive Chef Derwin (Master Chief) Jackson prepare dinner! MSF created “What I am Thankful for” turkeys with the women and children and provided inspirational calendars and planners for the ladies. MSF would like to thank everyone who donated their time to make the event a success!

PADV Thanksgiving (Part 2)

MSF was able to hold Part 2 of its 2nd Annual Partners Against Domestic Violence (PADV) “What I’m Thankful For” event on Saturday, November 15th. This is the latter of 2 events held each year at PADV facilities. MSF provided inspirational calendars, planners, crossword puzzles and candy canes with positive messages to the women and children. New Mercies Christian Church donated money for the purchase of the food for the festivities. MSF members and volunteers cooked 4 types of baked chicken, long grain rice, mac & cheese, zucchini casserole, salad and corn bread muffins. To top it all off, homemade pecan pies and chocolate chip cookies were served for dessert!

When asked about participating in the event, MSF volunteer Jerome Vance stated, “This was a great event and I’m very happy to have been a part of it. It was inspiring to be among such wonderful women. Although they are going through a difficult period in their lives, they still found within themselves the spirit to make us all feel welcomed and to spend time talking and laughing with us. The kids were all fantastic! It was a beautiful thing to spend time with the kids and to see how involved they were with the crafts. A child’s smile is priceless and I’m thankful to have been a part of bringing a smile to their faces.”

MSF would like to thank everyone who gave their time, money and support to the event!

One Big Surprise!

MSF traveled to Louisiana on December 9th to deliver presents to Ms. Dorothy and her family. What Ms. Dorothy didn’t know was that there was also a BIG surprise in store for her. The presents were being delivered in a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that was going to be donated to her! MSF used Go Fund Me to raise donations for the van.

Once the presents were unloaded, Ms. Dorothy was distracted by MSF member Deon Rivera and President Shannon Singleton while the bow and card were placed on the vehicle by Kevin Singleton, an MSF support services member. Shannon informed Ms. Dorothy there was one last present, but that they needed her help to figure out how to get it inside. When Ms. Dorothy saw the large bow and card on the windshield of the van, she was speechless! To confirm what she was seeing, Shannon commented, “I just don’t know how we are going to get this van in the house!”

After Ms. Dorothy was able to get over the shock of the surprise, she shared this with us: “I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped me out and I really appreciate it.”

MSF would also like to thank everyone who gave their money, time, and prayers to help make this a success!
